Saturday Morning Art Class

November 10 & 17, 2007

Our Secondary Art Education class through Old Dominion University hosted a free art class for school age children in the Tidewater area. The theme for the classes was Visionary Outsider Artists, based on the art work displayed in the Baron and Ellen Gordon Self-Taught Art Gallery at the ODU Gallery on campus. The artist my group choose was Thornton Dial, a famous Outsider Artist who created art using mixed media. The students created their self-portraits using found objects of their choice. The class was extremely successful, with the students producing a wide variety of unique pieces reflecting their own unique personalities.

Girl Scout Night at the Ceramics Studio

November 27, 2007

A local Girl Scout troop from Virginia Beach, VA visited the Old Dominion University’s ceramic studio for a lesson in throwing pottery. Our Secondary Art Education class had the pleasure of assisting our ODU professor in teaching the 15 middle school aged girls to use the potter’s wheel. All of the scouts were successful in creating a piece of pottery and having a great time. Even some of the parents joined in!
